I opted for both since I was brand new to the game. Once you’re in the game and have controls that work, you can then choose if you want a tutorial or not and if you even want a HUD. While this worked, I did find it annoying that the game tells you every time you start it that you should really use a controller and will sometimes use the controller buttons to guide you instead of the keyboard equivalent. This meant that I had to play with a mouse and keyboard which most PC players I know prefer anyway. I was using some wired Nintendo Switch Pro controllers that work beautifully on Steam, but I guess Epic hasn’t sorted them out yet (I’m guessing it has more to do with the store/launcher and less with the game). My first frustration was that the game recommends you use a controller, but my controllers wouldn’t work with it. It has a lot of ideas thrown into it, and they can work, but it can also be very aggravating to try to figure things out. If you want to play the game on PS4 or Xbox, it will be available December 2019.Īs I mentioned before, Ancestors is very unique. The game became available on PC via the Epic Games Store last week, and I’ve had the luck to give it a go. It is a game that explores human evolution. I could continue to evolve the tribe but I don't have plans to because it's a slog from here, and I'm convinced the best of the content has already been experienced at 26 hours in.Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a very unique game from Patrice Désilets and Panache Digital Games. There are a ton of unintuitive features in this game, but it was well worth what I paid for it on sale and the experience of discovering new things in this game was great. ![]() That's what the whole game is supposed to be about, monkey see monkey do. This overall feels lame, as I expected starving monkeys to decide to drop whatever they're holding to grab food on their own when the rest of the tribe is eating. It requires telling them to switch hands or drop the item they're holding so they can grab and eat food. Those monkeys then promptly get mauled and I have to scare away the predators or agro them to my character, bringing the monkeys back out of the tree and repeating the cycle.ĪI has the ability to switch hands when they're holding an object but they won't be able to eat or drink when they have something in their "active" hand. This mechanic is worse the bigger the tribe gets and there was little point in climbing trees for safety when I had a maxed clan because there are usually a few monkey AI standing idle at the base of the tree seasoning themselves up for the tigers. The AI was too stupid to climb the tree if my character was not past the programmed maximum distance threshhold, so if there aren't the tallest trees nearby to climb then the monkeys won't get to safety. It's frustrating because there are a ton of attacks that will then require healing and this collection is mostly done manually for the entire tribe.Įxploring with the tribe was a pain until unlocking the counter-attack and group crafting perks and even after I had to do almost everything while in combat because the AI is hit-or-miss.īefore these traits were unlocked the monkeys would basically just get mauled over and over even if I climbed a tree and tried to regroup them into the tree. The programming for the AI monkeys to collect healing meds is hit-or-miss. ![]() After that the game is repetitive and tedious. The interesting content ran out after most of the ingame tips were applied.
